Democritus
R.V:Democritus was a Greek philosopher. He was born at Abdera in Thrace, greece around 460 BC and died around 370 BC .He took the ideas of his time and developed what is considered to be the first theory of atomic structure.
Democritus discovered a theory that that all matter is made up of various everlasting indivisible elements which he called atoms. His theory was that if you keep halving something ,it will eventually end up with something so small that it can’t be halved any more. These are called atoms and they have always existed and can’t be created or destroyed, but they are always moving and are surrounded by completely empty space. When something has changed and/or changing to the atoms, This was due to atoms rearranging themselves or moving a different way. Democritus theory differed from Aristotle’s theory of how Earth is made up of four elements including earth, air, fire and water. Democritus explains a more logical way to explaining the theory of atomic structure.Even though Democritus theory was unpopular due to Aristotle’s theory it helped Democritus to explain the observations that he made. For example a substance that is a solid or liquid, hot or cold, spicy or sweet was due to the shape of its atoms and because of how much space there was between them and the way they moved. |
M.F:Democritus advanced science by making many very important discoveries in the span of his lifetime but the greatest was that of the atom.
Democritus experiment was he took a simple seashell and break it in half. He then took that half and broke it in half over and over and over and over again until he was finally left with a fine powder. He then took the smallest piece from the powder and tried to break that but could not. So thus Democritus had discovered what he was the indivisible building block of life the atom.
